How do you know you're learning? In some modern illustrations or cartoon-type depictions, you'll recall seeing wheels turning in a character's head, and perhaps steam coming out of their ears -- and even a little perspiration.
That gross depiction of the learning process is the closest we'll get to being able to visualize the physiological process of learning. One important thing to note is that learning takes many hours, and many types of methodologies for TRUE learning to happen. This includes things like repetition and testing.
With Bloom's taxonomy we see the top level of the pyramid showing a layer labeled, "Create." This is the last level of cognition called metacognition. It's required to truly learn.
Remember those subjects in high school you just breezed through and have no ability to recall the subject matter today? That's because you only scratched the surface and got to a level of "Understanding," but not truly mastering like you would have if you reached the "Create," level.
The next time you feel frustrated, with something you are learning, and just "can't get it," remember this chart and realize that you're just transitioning through the next higher level of Bloom's taxonomy.
